Awakenings: Evenings of film, coffee and discussion

The Norwich Conference Network in association with Aladdin’s Café invite you to reflect on and discuss series of films touching on some of the key issues of our time and the human situation. Our first series is about underlying issues that have led to the current and ongoing collapse.

We kick off with a series of three  films on the financial system at the root of our current economic debacle, the first a spirited assault, the second a carefully reasoned analysis of banking’s – and money’s – operations, and the third an exploration of some possible ways forward.

  1. Concursanté – Sunday 20th March – 7pm. Rodrigo Cortés Giráldez’ first feature film, that was released to critical acclaim and earned several awards, including the Critics’ prize at the Malaga Film Festival.
  2. Money as Debt – Sunday 27th March – 8pm. A short animated documentary film by Canadian artist and filmmaker Paul Grignon about the monetary systems practised through modern banking. The film presents Grignon’s view of the process of money creation by banks and its historical background, and warns of his belief in its subsequent unsustainability.
  3. Time for Change – Sunday 3rd April – 8pm. Bregtje van der Haak’s documentary introduces you to the new revolutionaries of Barcelona, Tallin and Jakarta. They are modern day heroes. They do not wait for political parties or institutions to change their world; they simply do it themselves, by creating new local currencies or by working in social networks.
